It was announced that Canisius University will hold dual commencement ceremonies this year for the graduate and undergraduate classes of 2000.

A group of students will travel to Morelia, Mexico to participate in Mexico 2000, an internship at Canisius' sister institution, the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolas de Hidalgo.

Paul J. Strassberger, '38 of Palo Alto, California, has committed $1 million to the college's Imagine Canisius capital campaign fund. In recognition of the gift, the college will dedicate the Paul J. '38 and Rita Strassberger Center for Entrepreneurship on the third floor of the newly renovated Lyons Hall.

Canisius University has received a $900,000 grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Chevy Chase, MD, the nation's largest private supporter of science education.

Dr. Peter Hayes, professor of history at Northwestern University, spoke on the Holocaust as part of the Oishei grant received by Dr. Larry Jones and Dr. Nancy Rosenbloom to develop new courses and related activities on "The Jewish Experience in Comparative Perspective: Europe and America."

Canisius University President Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J., dedicated the newly renovated Lyons Hall. The building is named in honor of James F. Lyons and his wife, Judith, in recognition of their $3 million commitment to the Imagine Canisius capital campaign, the largest gift in the college's 130-year history. Designed by architect Louis Leinert and built in 1908, Lyons Hall served as the former Mount St. Joseph's High School until Canisius acquired it in 1988. As the new "gateway to the college", it is home to the Admissions and Enrollment offices, several technology classrooms, the Media Center, the Communication and Fine Arts Departments.

Canisius University announced a new four-year major in Accounting Information Systems (AIS) to begin in the Fall of 2001.

The Canisius University Contemporary Writers Series hosted nationally renowned fiction writer and Lackawanna native Connie Porter.

Canisius University President Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J., dedicated the newly renovated Carol and Carl Montante Cultural Center at Main Street and Eastwood Place. Designed by Cannon Design of Grand Island, NY, the renovation took one year to complete and included the installation of a professional stage and sound system, new lighting and acoustics, flexible seating modules, complete exterior cleaning and new landscaping. The renovation was made possible, in part, by a $1.5 million gift from Carol and Carl Montante to the Imagine Canisius capital campaign.

Canisius University hosted a visit by the United Nations Ambassador from Niger, Ousame Moutari.

The Canisius University Computer Programming Team (Joshua Dissek, Erik Harman, and Robert Starkweather) competed in the regional finals of the 25th Annual International Collegiate Programming Contest at Westfield State College in Massachusetts.

Canisius University achieved reaffirmation of accreditation of its undergraduate and master's degree programs in business by the Board of Directors of AACSB (the International Association for Management Education).
